Sleep Disordered Breathing/Apnea is defined as disturbance of sleep patterns over an extended period of time. A common reason for this condition is a poorly positioned jaw and/or tongue, which can lead to snoring and a blocked airway. The result can be a significant reduction in oxygen needed for rejuvenation, healing and a good night’s sleep. This condition also linked to childrensuffering from ADD, bedwetting, learning difficulties and growth problems. Symptoms that are commonly linked to sleep apnea include Snoring, excessive daytime tiredness, morning headaches, heartburn, GER( gastroesophageal reflux ) and depression. There are also many related risk factors including high Blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. According to recently published guidelines of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, oral appliances are now considered appropriate for the primary treatment of mild to moderate OSA, and for those patients who fail other treatments such as CPAP and/or surgery.

Functional Orthotic Design fabricate many different types of appliances dealing with Sleep and Airway. We strongly advise the use of an overnight sleep study to ALL our clients before prescribing any appliance to your patients for the treatment of sleep disorders and airway problems. Simply repositioning the mandible in a forward position from CR is by no means the correct way to treat this very serious subject. Who knows ?? you may be closing the patients airway further still !!
